"Payment in Iron" Limited Edition Art Print
Tom Freeman's beautiful depiction of Preble's first bombardment of Tripoli (August 3, 1803) has captured the brilliant blue of the Mediterranean, contrasting with the dusty desert sands. The massive U.S.S. Constitution and the topsail schooner U.S.S. Vixen defiantly sail past the Tripolitan shore batteries in support of the lateen rigged gunboats drifting in the background. As seen in the piece, the Constitution suffered damage to her sails and rigging, but only one American would be wounded; an early tribute to her powerfully built hull. The title Old Ironsides would come later, but she began earning her mettle early, here on the Barbary Coast.Image Size: 21 3/8 inches x 29 1/2 inches. Overall Size: 25 1/2 inches x 34 inches.
